First work of the year!

Wednesday, January 6th, 2010 | Art, Byzantium, Comic | No Comments

It’s a cameo of Constantine the great that I made to cross promote my historical webcomic, Emperors of Byzantium, and my friend Irving’s blog, Neo Byzantium.

It was done with my favorite brush-pens, on a smallish piece of bristol board.

Cast page update

Friday, December 25th, 2009 | Art, Comic, Empathy | No Comments

The point I’m at now is correcting my mistakes. I somehow used the color to edit some of the faces beyond recognition, so I have to go back and study the character sheets to figure out what the heck I did wrong. Should be interesting…  Gaaaaaah

Newness

Friday, November 6th, 2009 | Art, Comic, Empathy | No Comments

New character, new story (entitled ‘Empathy’), trying to do a subtly new style for both. Plus… new post! Gawd, how long has it been??

(click on the thumbs for larger images and semi-explanatory text)

More to come as I work on a cast group ‘photo’ art piece.

Not quite right, but…

Finished the Daughter of the Sun picture! The biggest change in my technique with this one is that I started coloring on a base of the light yellow, in other words, with a colored background as opposed to white. I feel like this could have used something more, but I got sick of staring at it and decided to call it done.

First is the sketch, looking pretty muddy and smudged, and second is the inks and the beginnings of the colored pencils/markers. It’s too bad I didn’t scan the inks, because they looked kinda cool.

With this picture I’m trying to establish a color palette and overall feeling for the comic that I’m working on for the iphone. You can see some digital panels here and here, but I’m considering a switch to mixed media on bristol board. I would use marker, colored pencil, watercolor, acrylics, construction and origami paper to make it more interesting and textured. At the moment though, I don’t know which way I’ll go, it depends on whether a publishing deal works out or not.

The interesting thing about the iphone comic medium is that I can make it work more like a movie than a comic. The story itself is more episodic than a usual story form, so I think it will lend itself well to the iphone.
